The Throat Chakra also referred to as Vishuddha, is the purification center, where the nectar called amrita drips down. It filters poisons or negative thoughts blocking us from the full expression of our creativity and integrity. When it is open, adverse experiences are transformed into wisdom and learning.
The success and failure in one's life are said to depend upon the state of the throat chakra. When Vishuddha is closed doubt can prevent us from seeking truth beyond the limitations of cultural and family conditioning. Guilt is a prominent reason for this chakra to block the kundalini energy moving upwards. Though the fifth of the 7 main chakras, it is the first of the higher energetic centers and serves as both a channel for bringing psychic energy down as well as a bridge from the heart in the raising of consciousness. It takes us from one side of the river (our body) to the other side (spirit realms). The element associated with this chakra is ether/akasha, through which subtle vibrations of mantras, a word or sound repeated to aid concentration, are transmitted. In tantric yoga this chakra has 16 smoke-colored petals, each linked with one of the Sanskrit vowels, or musical notes. Ether, or Akasha, is related to how we hear these as well as the pranic action behind speech. Ether can channel into our bodies more perceptive to the source of all sounds and vibrations. When this chakra is mastered, it is said we can we can understand other languages through clairaudience and ESP (Extra-Sensory Perception) and even understand the languages of birds, other animals and the sounds of higher elemental beings. If we truly listen we can hear the message within the throat chakra in daily conversations. Our voice indicates our strengths and our weaknesses depending on the dormant or missing notes in our speech. Listening is the real secret of communication and someone who has mastered the throat chakra can be described as a “good listener,” being fully present in hearing others. By truly listening, the words that people say become secondary to the tone and emotions they are conveying.
In the Indian tradition, when we have learned Satya, the truthfulness of speech, we can speak our deepest desires and have them come true. When the throat chakra is active we express ourselves in prayer, word or song. By expressing our high wisdom to others we strengthen this chakra and continue to deepen our personal spiritual path. Contrary, we could use our words and tone to hurt or slander in which case we will loose sustenance from the sacred ether. Energy imbalances will manifest as ear, throat and respiratory problems. Vishudda is associated with the production of thyroid-balancing hormones, linked to the way we repair body cells, blood calcium, and phosphate levels. Working with our breath and increasing prana keeps us healthy and more alive. We can go weeks without food or water, but no longer than a couple minutes without air. Some tools to bring more life into this chakra and our entire being are toning and use of mantras. Toning is the sound of our soul listening to the music of the celestial spheres. It moves pranic energy throughout the meridians and brings forward wholeness, valuable for shifting old patterns held at cellular levels. A mantra, a poetic hymn incantation or prayer is also helpful. Tibetan, Buddhism or Zen use mantras in ceremony to alter brain waves so that a person can reach deep realizations. The gift of this chakra is accepting your originality and expressing your authentic voice. Stand up for what you believe, saying no when you need to, and staying open. Though it’s often easier to say what another person may want to hear, trust yourself to stay tactful or diplomatic in the delicate dance of expressing what you truly mean. Share your truth in a number of mediums, including song, dance and creating art like this throat chakra mandala!
